expressive art therapy
expressive arts therapy combines the use of multiple art forms and is an integrative approach. The beauty of expressive therapy is that we embrace the process, without worrying about the "quality" of the final product. It's not about skill as an artist, but rather the process of expression.

Some of the methods employed in drama therapy are games, improvisation, role play, developmental transformations, sociodrama and psychodrama; these are very process-oriented and unscripted. Other methods, such as Playback Theater, Theater of the Oppressed, and the performance of plays are more formal and presentational, involving an audience.
All the components of theater -acting, props, masks, puppets, stories -are available as therapeutic tools. Drama therapy can range from fun, spontaneous warm-up exercises to incredibly intense dramatic enactments and rescripting of past traumas.
Most drama therapists come from the world of theater. They are individuals who realize the healing power of drama through therapeutic experiences they’ve had in their education or career and want to facilitate change and growth in others. Many recall that in college they were torn between majoring in psychology or theater and decided to follow the theater path. They want to use drama to help others in a direct way or to use theater as a social change agent, rather than only as entertainment or education.

Renee Emunah, one of the founders of Drama therapy writes in her book, Acting for Real:
"Drama is a vehicle not only for expressing and integrating new aspects of ourselves, but also for expressing suppressed shadow aspects of ourselves. Facets of our personalities that have been concealed, from others, and often from ourselves, can be unleashed via the dramatic role. The role enables previously unacknowledged or untolerated parts to be given voice, and at the same time to be contained within the safe arena of the dramatic act."
